“Come spirto in un’ampolla” portrays Alessandro, a builder who dreamed the idea to construct a big wellness center among the old ruins he had bought many years ago. A massive and disastrous financial investment broke his dream, and drove him to isolate himself from society to escape from his failure.
Constantly balanced between dream and reality, Alessandro remains in a suspended state of incompleteness, in fear of old age and death, and in the pain of going through these life stages in solitude. Those ruins are more like a prison today, and his resilience has no value except in still turning that dream into reality.
The project was born to go deeper inside its need to disappear. The understanding of his choice could be a way to see much more inside of this practice, which concerns me because of the kind of isolation I chose for myself in the past. With constant participant observation, I tried to reword Alessandro’s life as a puzzle: his old snapshots, his writings, and my photographs, to get more into his life.
There was something there that questioned me about identity, which matters to me in this moment of life. I went back to him and saw how identity can be lost and how you can deal with that – for better or worse – through this complicated and challenging choice, that makes this common to many other people’s stories of leaving the old life for a utopic other one.
